Finland bounces back with a win over Belgium

With the victory over Belgium in the match played on June 6th, Finland got their UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying bid back on track and which ended Belgium's slim hopes of reaching the finals from Group A. Finland, after their home defeat by Serbia , bounced back with the victory over Belgium (2-0). Jonatan Johansson and Alexei Eremenko Jr made the winning goals for Finland. Kolkka delivered a perfect centre on 27th minute which was well met in the centre of the area by Johansson to put Finland ahead. Finland is now level on points with second-placed Serbia and Portugal. Finland will next take on Kazakhstan on 22nd August when Belgium welcome Serbia.

Bosnia -Herzegovina wins over Turkey in Euro 2008 qualifiers

In Bosnia - Herzegovina Vs Turkey match played on June 2nd , with the first goal by Hakan Sukur at the 12th minute it looked like Turkey is on the way to another victory. But with the final whistle, spotlight was on a lesser known forward making his national-team debut. Edin Džeko was duly given his first national-team chance by Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Fuad Muzurović. Nearing the interval, when Turkey was having a 2-1 lead, Muzurović's young protégé was to have the last word. He connected with Vedin Musić's long pass before rifling in from the edge of the area. It gave the hosts the confidence they needed and the last edge from Adnan Ćustović won it for Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Turkey being defeated for the first time in the campaign, the Bosnian fans who witnessed the victory, are beginning to believe their favourites have a real chance of reaching a major finals for the first time. Bosnia has also won the match with Malta played on June 6th. Having won the match Bosnia is equal in points with Turkey and is now in the second position in Group C.

Starkovs returns as Latvian coach

Aleksandrs Starkovs, returns as Latvia coach replacing Jurijs Andrejevs after a 1-0 defeat with Liechenstein. Starkovs played a major role in leading Latvia to UEFA EURO 2004. The 2-0 home defeats against Spain and Denmark last week have made too apparent how much needs to be done to make Latvia competitive again. Latvia having won only one match in their six Group F games and only four goals scored is at the bottom of the Group with 3 points.

Spain beats Liechtenstein in Euro 2008 qualifiers

Striker David Villa scored two neatly-taken goals to earn Spain a 2- 0 Euro 2008 qualifying win in Liechtenstein that lifted them into second place in Group F on Wednesday. Villa put Spain ahead in the eighth minute when he slotted home from a tight angle after rounding the keeper and took his tally to 12 goals in 23 games with an overhead kick soon after. Villa's early goals were rare bright spots in an otherwise intermittent performance from Spain and the striker spurned the chance to complete a hat-trick when he fired an injury-time penalty against a post.

Sweden leads Group F with 18 points after being awarded a win in the abandoned match with Denmark. Spain holds second position in the Group with 15 points. The next match for Sweden is with Denmark and Spain with Iceland.

Croatia Vs Russia ends in a goalless draw

The 2008 Euro Cup qualifier played last Wednesday between Croatia and Russia, ended in a goalless draw, just like last September qualifiers in Moscow. The relatively young national team from Croatia, which registered with FIFA in July 1992 and has not lost a single home tie for almost 13 years, dominated the first half as Russia was forced to soak up the pressure. But the Russian team, with experienced Dutch Coach Guus Hiddink at the helm, remained resolute throughout the first period rebuffing dangerous Croatian attacks. Russia played more of an aggressive game in the second half coming close to finding Croatia's net through Alexander Kerzhakov, Alexei Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich, but were unable to find a way through.

Wednesday's goalless draw has brought Russia and Croatia a point each, but the Croatians are still in pole position in Group E with 17 points, while the Russians hold third place with 15 points, with both teams having played seven qualifying games. Israel, who came out victorious 2-0 on Wednesday in an away game with Andorra, is in second place on goal difference with 17 points like group leaders Croatia, but Israel has already played eight games. England is only one point behind Russia in fourth place after seven games. Russia will play their next qualifier at home on September 8 against the team from Macedonia, which is currently ranked fifth in Group E with seven points after seven matches.

Denmark midfielder Christian Poulsen was banned for three competitive internationals. Italy beats Lithuania in Euro 2008 qualifiers

Italy began qualifying by drawing with Lithuania and losing to France in September, two months after the Azzurri's World Cup victory. Italy's 2-0 victory over Lithuania on Wednesday was its fifth straight after failing to win its first two qualifiers. Many Italian players struggled with fatigue this season but their performance against Lithuania was reminiscent of the World Cup victory in Germany last year. Sampdoria forward Fabio Quagliarella scored his first two international goals, the first with a left-footed shot and the second with his right foot. France leads Group B with 18 points, Italy is next with 16 and Scotland is third with 15.
