The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) announced on Monday its decision to appoint the legendary Penev as the coach of the national team for the remainder of the European Championships. This will be his second time in charge of the team. In his first stint in charge, Dimitar Penev led Bulgaria to the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the US eliminating defending champions Germany in the quarter-finals and qualified the side for Euro 96 in England. Hristo Stoichkov, the previous coach of Bulgaria’s national team, quit in April 2007 to lead Spain's Celta Vigo. Levski Sofia's Stanimir Stoilov was in caretaker charge for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Belarus last month. The first match in charge for Penev will be on August 22, when Bulgaria host Wales in an international friendly in Bulgaria’s coastal city of Bourgas.
